GE Sugar Beets

This is fresh off the news headlines:
Citizens for Health, a US consumer advocacy group, has launched an online campaign to warn consumers about the dangers of genetically engineered (GE) sugar beets in food products.
Targeting at several large firms which pledged not to use the GE Sugar Beets in 2001.

Why is the need for this campaign? The group believes that
the use of sugar beet seeds that have built-in resistance to the Monsanto's Roundup herbicide could create new and unpredictable health and environmental risks.
Although reports from USDA (US Department of Agriculture) and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) declare the H7-1 sugar beets as not posing any risk to human or animal health as well as the environment, the Group believes consumers should be informed about the food products that they are purchasing.

Under EU Regulation 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed, any food exports must be clearly labelled if they contain Genetically Engineered ingredients.

Here's the link for more information.

I am totally against GM foods no matter if they pose any health risks or not. Join in the campaign here!

I have friends who grow sugar beets. I will have to ask if they are using the genetically engineered ones.

I don't think so. According to the report, those seeds are not planted yet! :P
